Simplification of Morse Decompositions using Morse Set Mergers

    No full text
Abstract. A common problem of vector field topology algorithms is the large number of the resulting topological features. This paper describes a method to simplify Morse decompositions by iteratively merging pairs of Morse sets that are adjacent in the Morse Connection Graph (MCG). When Morse sets A and B are merged, they are replaced by a single Morse set, that can be thought of as the union of A, B and all trajectories connecting A and B. Pairs of Morse sets to be merged can be picked based on a variety of criteria. For example, one can allow only pairs whose merger results in a topologically simple Morse set to be selected, and give preference to mergers leading to small Morse sets.

Normal life crises and insanity : mental illness contextualised

Interventioner bör Ă€ven inkludera mĂ€nniskors socioekonomiska och psykosociala vĂ€rld snarare Ă€n att enbart fokusera pĂ„ deras mentala tillstĂ„nd.According to a 2005 survey, the people of RosengĂ„rd, a culturally heterogeneous borough of Malmö, Sweden, utilise considerably less mental health services in relation to their estimated needs than the rest of the city’s population. A study based on interviews with people living or working in the area revealed several possible reasons. Most important was their perception of what constitutes mental illness. If the cause of one’s disturbed mental state is viewed as a normal life crises rather than an illness, one does not seek medical treatment. The aim of this article is to illustrate how under-utilisation of mental health services by an immigrant population can be explained by their different perceptions of what constitutes mental illness. Interventions should add concerns regarding a client’s socio-economic and psychosocial needs, rather than solely follow a medical model

Heterozygous NOTCH1 Variants Cause CNS Immune Activation and Microangiopathy

NOTCH1 belongs to the NOTCH family of proteins that regulate cell fate and inflammatory responses. Somatic and germline NOTCH1 variants have been implicated in cancer, Adams-Oliver syndrome, and cardiovascular defects. We describe 7 unrelated patients grouped by the presence of leukoencephalopathy with calcifications and heterozygous de novo gain-of-function variants in NOTCH1. Immunologic profiling showed upregulated CSF IP-10, a cytokine secreted downstream of NOTCH1 signaling. Autopsy revealed extensive leukoencephalopathy and microangiopathy with vascular calcifications. This evidence implicates that heterozygous gain-of-function variants in NOTCH1 lead to a chronic central nervous system (CNS) inflammatory response resulting in a calcifying microangiopathy with leukoencephalopathy.
